Happy Fair Trade Friday everyone! We live such a blessed life here in America compared to what many people around the world face. We wake up in our own beds with plenty to eat, we work at a job that makes money for our families and many of us even own a car and a house!
Unfortunately, this is not the case in many countries around the world such as Rwanda where there is rampant poverty. This endless cycle of poverty leads to desperation and broken families. Many women will do anything to make a little money to be able to afford to eat their next meal or feed their children. This often includes selling their own body for less than a dollar. Sadder still, many women stay in this work because they know of no other alternative. Many have not have been able to get an education or learn a trade. They need to be rescued from this horror and shown that they have so much dignity and worth. They need to be given a new life. How can we can we do this?
Charity perhaps? Charity is great but it will not ultimately fix the problem and break the cycle of poverty. These women need a sustainable trade so that they can make their own money and build a life for themselves. Thankfully, companies such as DuHope are helping make this possible. Their mission is to rescue these women, train them in a trade (such as making jewelry) and then employ them long term so these women can provide for themselves and their children.
Duhope's website states that so far they, "have equipped over 30 women with job skills, spiritual development, education, and a way to earn a sustainable income with dignity." They currently have, "11 women in artisan training that have a desire to take their skills to the next level. At DuHope we create a safe and holistic way for women to exit sex work while walking alongside them in faith, hope, love, and dignity...They receive needed counseling, on-site childcare, meals, literacy skills, job training and other vital services." How awesome is that?!?
So what are some of these beautiful products these Rwandan women are making? So glad you asked! My favorite earrings are these Stone Tassel earrings. The ones I am wearing are blue leather and green stones but they have two other color options (patterned green with white stones and black leather with pink stones) to choose from. These earrings are a part of their Spring 2019 collection as well as this cute Studded Wrap Bracelet which I love as well! Make sure you check out their website this Saturday because they are launching their Summer collection!! I'm so excited to see what new beautiful pieces they will unveil!
*Thank you to DuHope for gifting items in this post, as always all opinions are my own.
